Torrington drops home opener to Pittsfield
The Torrington Twisters lost the 2008 home opener 5-1 Thursday to the Pittsfield Dukes.
Torrington's pitching and solid defense kept the team in it until the ninth, where Pittsfield score three runs. The Dukes got an RBI single from Craig Hertler (San Jose State) and a line drive two-run homer from Tyler Stampone (William & Mary) to take a 5-1 win. Pittsfield led 2-1 entering the ninth.
Leading the Twisters was Chase Austin (Elon). Austin drove in Torrington's only run with a solo home run deep over both walls in left center field in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Twisters play the second game of the four game homestand against the Manchester Silkworms tonight at 7.
