Local flavor among this year's Twisters
Not unlike other years, the Torrington Twisters have some local talent on this season's team.
Leading the local contingent is infielder Alan Fredriksson of Torrington, a familiar name to local baseball enthusiasts. Fredriksson, the son of General Manager Kirk Fredriksson, had a strong season at Manchester Community College in Manchester, Conn., finishing second on the team for the regular season in hitting (.405), hits (53), doubles (9) and RBIs (30), according to the National Junior College Athletic Association Web site. The Cougars enjoyed a successful season, winning their region and making a trip to the NJCAA Division III World Series, where they lost both games in a double-elimination tournament.
Catcher Andrew Rocco of Goshen had a strong season at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, hitting a steady .286, according to the NJCAA Web site. Playing in 37 games in the regular season, Rocco had 34 hits, including a tie for third on the team in doubles (9) and a tie for fourth in doubles (2). Rocco is the only returning player from last year's squad.
Outfielder Brian Baudinet of Watertown had a stellar junior year for the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Baudinet played baseball at The Taft School in Watertown during his high school years in Connecticut. In his junior season with the Minutemen, Baudinet led the team in batting average (.351), hits (61), home runs (5), total bases (81) and walks (29). Baudinet was also a leader on defense, making just one error in 105 chances while roaming the outfield.
