Twisters drop opening game at Manchester
The Torrington Twisters opened the season a day late with a 9-7 loss to the Manchester Silkworms in Manchester Saturday night.
Andrew Triggs suffered the loss for Torrington as the Manchester offense scored six runs in the first two innings. Despite the 6-0 hole at the end of two innings, the Twisters rallied for four runs in the third to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Torrington would get within 6-5 after the top of the fourth, but the Silkworms scored twice in the bottom of that inning to take an 8-5 lead. After Manchester added a run in the seventh for a 9-5 advantage, the Twisters scored twice in the eighth to get within two at 9-7. That would be as close as Torrington would get, however, as the Silkworms shut the door.
Blake Silguero (Cisco Junior College) went 3-for-5 with an RBI for the Twisters, who fall to 0-1. Josh Chasse (San Diego State University) added a 2-for-5 day that included a RBI, a stolen base and a run scored. Corey Shimada (University of Utah) went 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, two runs scored and two steals.
Shortstop Kevin Mager, recently signed by Torrington from the University of Maine (Orono), went 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk and two runs scored.
Manchester was led by Zach Hudson (Middle Tennessee State University, Murfreesboro) went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, three walks and three runs scored. Matt Grosso (Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.) of Marlborough, Conn., went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored while JD Broderick (West Virginia State, Institute) went 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs and two walks for the Silkworms. Despite not recording an official at-bat, J.P. Polchinski (Army, West Point, N.Y.) scored three runs because he was hit by pitches twice and walked once.
Manchester took advantage of three hit batters and 10 walks issued by Twister pitching. Torrington is scheduled to play again Monday at Newport at 6:35 p.m. Sunday's home opener against the Gulls was rained out.
